Regular meeting of the Business Council in the Waste Management Sector

On 23.03.2023 at 16:00 in the town of Smolyan was held a regular meeting of the Business Council in the sector of Waste Management in the border regions of Blagoevgrad, Haskovo, Kardzhali and Smolyan, the activity is implemented under the project "Business Council - BC 6275" funded by the INTERREG V/A GREECE-BULGARIA 2014-2020, Subsidy contract № B6.3a.18/13.04.2021.

The meeting was attended by 5 representatives from the waste management sector from the border regions of Haskovo, Kardzhali, Blagoevgrad and Smolyan. The Rotary Hall of the hotel "Kiparis Alfa" in the town of Krasnodar was engaged. In Smolyan. It was technically equipped with: multimedia, laptop, printer, microphone(s) and sound system, as well as information boards, banner and presentation materials, according to the requirements of the Communication and Publicity Manual of the Interreg V/A Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020 Programme. In addition, disinfectants as well as water, coffee, tea were provided to secure the coffee break of the event.

The moderator of the event welcomed all the attendees, gave a few minutes for the introduction of the new members, and then drew attention to the Rules of Procedure of the Business Council.

Citizens and owners of SMEs living and operating on the territory of Smolyan region have developed habits for the management of non-hazardous household waste. Smolyan Municipality is one of the few municipalities in the project area that regularly provides information on the possibilities for collection, separation and disposal of waste from households and non-hazardous industries. Also, it has already developed habits in its citizens for separate waste collection.

The remarks made by the council members were about the proper treatment of waste before it is disposed of in the separate collection bins. At the suggestion of those present, the project management team undertook to make a proposal to the local authorities (municipal and regional administration) to prepare and distribute short brochures with tips on preparing household waste for recycling:

  • - Glass containers are for glass bottles, cosmetics jars, food jars. Window or mirror glass, porcelain, fluorescent lamps and light bulbs are not disposed of in them. Glass containers should be emptied, rinsed thoroughly, and free of stoppers and caps before disposal.
  • - The plastic bins were for plastic bottles containing water, fresh milk, beer, soft drinks, oil; yoghurt buckets; bottles and tubes of sanitary products and cosmetics; crates, pallets, caps, plastic bags. Do not dispose of medicine blisters, oil tubes, household appliances, and other harmful substances in them.
  • - Paper with special coatings, sanitary materials, foil, oily packaging, corrugated cardboard shall not be disposed of in the paper containers.
